These are just the things i have, i never said they were good options…. i am a 14 year old girl, alto, and i am going to audition for “The Sound of Music”. Its at a local playhouse but i really want to get in and do well. Directors, which song would you want to hear most? Whats overused? Please help, thank you :)

Your audition song should show them that you can sing whatever music you’ll be singing in “The Sound of Music”. Make sure you practice your song exactly as you will be performing it for the audition. If it isn’t acapella, don’t practice that way and then hand your sheet music to the accompanist and be “thrown off” by a bridge you forgot about. Or don’t sing along to the recording and discover that the sheet music is in a different key or it doesn’t actually have any sign of melody in the piano part!

I don’t know what part you want (maybe anything), but you should choose one of your Broadway songs–Kelly Clarkson and Lily Allen won’t cut it–nor will that old karaoke standby “Sweet Caroline”.
Very few people actually sing “Defying Gravity”–which was originally a duet–as well as they think they do and it’s now one of the most overused audition songs out there. Ditto anything from “Rent”. Whatever “Glee” version of a show tune you’ve heard, you better go find the musical theatre version because it’s DIFFERENT!

Out of all your songs, pick the one that not only shows off your voice to the best advantage, but also sounds as close in style and range as the music from “The Sound of Music”. I don’t suggest you try to learn a new song now. And whatever else you, think “choir” over “American Idol”.
If you plan to try out for other musicals, make sure you learn some other songs from actual musicals, and dont’ just rely on pop versions on television shows or talent contests.

I’m not mean…I’d like for you to do well too.
