Radio Free Dc Vol.2 $9.59 Fort Knox Five’s critically acclaimed album ‘Radio Free DC’ has been voted ‘One of this year’s most exciting, most eclectic funk albums’ by USA Today. Wanting to move things in new directions, the Fort Knox Five have enlisted several of their favorite DJs and producers to add their take to Radio Free DC The second single in Fort Knox Five’s RADIO FREE DC Remixed series will devastate any dancefloor. Malente’s Champion Sound Mix of ‘The Wonder Strikes Again’ is a no hold’s barred, electro-ragga breaks monster. Featuring rapid fire vocals by the unstoppable Sleepy Wonder, this tune means serious bizness. Taking things to a deeper level, Sub Swara transforms Killa Soundboy into an apocalyptic dubstep destroyer. Thunderous bass and dark indian rhythms furiously propel Sleepy Wonder and Zeebo’s ragga vocals into a murderous future rocker. We’ve also included an instrumental mix as an added bonus |

Radio Free Europa $14.38 This is guitarist Mark O’Leary’s seventh release on Leo Records — and his seventh different trio project. Each previous album has documented his playing with key figures of creative jazz, from Matthew Shipp and Mat Maneri to Tomasz Stanko, Billy Hart, Uri Caine, Steve Swallow and Cuong Vu, to name only a few. Radio Free Europa is no different, even though this particular grouping bears a name (the other six are all credited to O’Leary and the other musicians involved). Then again, this is a Chicago-based project, so christening it Underground Jazz Trio is surely a wink at Rob Mazurek’s contribution to the city’s \avant-jazz scene, especially since O’Leary’s colleagues on this recording have been part of that scene for a while too: Tortoise drummer John Herndon and bassist Matt Lux from Isotope 217. Recorded in April 2006, Radio Free Europa is darker and more brooding than previous O’Leary releases. In fact, it has a strange film noir feel. Every piece remains rather quiet, not quite menacing yet disquieting. The guitarist churns out a near-uninterrupted stream of instant melodies, never quite locking onto a specific tonality, yet always somewhat tonal and graceful, while Herndon and Lux adopt a textural form of free improvisation. In the opener “Reaching Out,” Lux attempts a walking bassline that quickly dissolves into something else, and in the closer “Collateral,” O’Leary opts for an ambient, attack-less tone reminiscent of David Torn. Everywhere else, the music remains as previously described, with the guitarist doing his thing and the rhythm section doing theirs, the two camps tiptoeing around each other, producing enjoyable abstract jazz music in the process, but never really engaging one another. As a result, Radio Free Europa is a bit too homogeneous and a notch below O’Leary’s previous Leo releases, especially the beautiful Waiting. ~ François Couture, Rovi Performers: John Herndon – Drums; Mark O’Leary – Guitar; Matt Lux – Bass |

Radio Free Gristle $17.98 Guitarist Greg Koch makes a musical and sociopolitical statement here regarding the sad state of radio in the U.S.A. Hence, he frames this outing around his fictitious spoken word radio snippets that interleave among these 27 tracks. At times, Koch’s humorous diatribes wear a bit thin throughout the duration of this affair, marked by his slick picking, progressive metal guitar licks, and rather bland vocals. However, there are some shining moments, evidenced by his affable sitar-guitar work on the piece “Torn Asunder” and elsewhere. The guitarist works through a series of pounding blues-rockers and pieces that more or less highlight his guitar wizardry. In fact, guitar hero Steve Vai — who must be commended for giving quite a few lesser-known artists a chance to flaunt their stuff — owns this record label. With this release, Koch receives sturdy support from a bass/drums rhythm section and drum loop artist Jazzmaster Ricci P. There are some striking moments, but the predictability factor, coupled with the often goofy dialogue, detracts from the entire listening experience upon repeated spins. ~ Glenn Astarita, Rovi Performers: Greg Koch – Sitar, Baritone, Voices, Dobro, Guitar, Vocals; Steve Andreoni – String Bass; Joe Morris – Drums; John Calarco – Drums |

Battle Stations $9.58 When Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and Johnny Griffin joined forces and formed a two-tenor front line, bop enthusiasts could safely assume that the sparks were going to fly. Davis and Griffin, after all, were one of hard bop’s exciting tenor teams — their saxophone battles were as legendary as the encounters of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, or Phil Woods and Gene Quill (who, unlike the other teams mentioned here, were a two-alto pair). Battle Stations, like other Davis/Griffin encounters, points to the fact that the two tenormen never had a problem finding common ground. Both had big tones; both were very extroverted, aggressive players; and both swung unapologetically hard — no one ever mistook either of them for members of jazz’s cool school, which favored subtlety, restraint, and understatement over intensity and aggression. A sense of friendly competition is evident on Battle Stations; when Davis and Griffin lock horns, the result is musical sportsmanship at its finest. And “friendly” is the operative word on this 1960 date — as competitive as Davis and Griffin could be, they had a great deal of respect for one another. Battle Stations (which employs Norman Simmons on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Ben Riley on drums) demonstrates that the saxmen were not only sparring partners, they were also a mutual admiration society, and the improvisers enjoy an incredibly strong rapport on hard-swinging numbers like “Pull My Coat,” “Hey Jim!,” and “What’s Happening.” Battle Stations is an album that fans of heated two-tenor exchanges shouldn’t overlook. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Ben Riley – Drums; Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis – Sax (Tenor); Johnny Griffin – Sax (Tenor); Junior Mance – Piano; Larry Gales – Bass; Norman Simmons – Piano; Victor Sproles – Bass |
